Competition “Kuldkala 2012” this year at lake Viljandi

The largest collective fishing in the Baltics, the traditional fishing competition “Kuldkala”, takes place on 18 February 2012 at lake Viljandi

In addition to the fishing competition and a concert programme there will also be an artisanal fare and a separate fishing gear flea market. In the fishing workshop one can learn the basic truths and subtleties of wintertime fishing and then put them to the test right there on the lake. Lovers of fish-dishes can watch the Fish Soup Gala, where many various soups (from sturgeon selyanka to fish-root beer soup) will be prepared and then offered for tasting. A separate area will be set for the kids’ programme.

A ticket allows participation in any programmes and/or the fishing competition.

The competitors’ task at the main competition of “Kuldkala 2012” is to catch marked fish from the lake

For this purpose 130 perches have been previously caught, marked and then released back into the lake. Every mark has a number on it and each number represents a prize: the biggest prizes are 3000, 1000 and 500 euros. If the fish carrying the numbers that represent the biggest prizes are not caught, an additional competition will be held between fishermen that catch any marked fish and the prizes will be given out based on the results of this additional competition.

Besides catching the marked fish also a team competition will be held. In order to participate, fishermen must previously register a team up to four (4) members. The catching task of the team competition will be announced shortly before the start of the competition. The first prize is a fishing trip to Norway.

Also a children’s competition “Kuldkalake 2012” will be held, where kids up to twelve (12) years of age (incl.) can participate. Before the children’s competition an ice hole drilling competition will be held with an aim to drill ice holes for the children’s competition.

All competitions will be held on the lake in restricted and marked areas. In order to participate in competitions, fishermen do not need to apply for a separate fishing permit – at the “Kuldkala” competition a joint fishing permit applies for all participants.

The wintertime “Kuldkala” party will be held for the 14th time – it is a great opportunity to enjoy a day in the Estonian winter and to see how much fishing luck anyone has on the day.
